The Four Phases of a Paid Search Marketing Campaign
Guided by over 20 years of marketing experience managing hundreds of campaigns and marketing deliverables, we’ve developed a four part system to maximize the effectiveness of our marketing consulting and managed creative services. Often, one or more of these four elements are under utilized or skipped entirely resulting in sub-optimal campaign performance and possibly even a complete waste of the investment.
1. Research & Plan – Month 1
This is arguably the most critical step of paid search marketing. Ironically, it is the most likely to be skipped or under-supported in an attempt to reduce cost.

3. Test & Adjust – Months 3 – 5
Once the campaign running for a couple months and has received some impressions and clicks, we can review click costs, competition, and performance. At that point, we make adjustments to the budget, ad messaging, and keywords. Very active campaigns with a lot of data can be adjusted more quickly than smaller campaigns; usually after one month of running live.
Our goal is to identify the most profitable keywords and maximize their budgets, reducing or removing the low performers. As the old adage goes: Feed the Tigers, Ride the Horses, Shoot the Dogs.

4. Monitor & Optimize – Months 5+
At this point, we have a well-planned and executed paid search campaign running. The workload at this point is much lower than in previous phases, but there are still important tasks. Some time must be spent to ensure the click and conversion rates stay on track. Minor tweaks may be needed for continuous optimization.
After a few months of this phase, some clients opt to take over and self-manage the campaign. Like anything else, this is not a problem if you have the time and expertise to do so with out jeopardizing the ongoing results. In that case, our team will fully support the transition and be ready to assist again when needed.
